Military Readings List
"Books are humanity in print." --Barbara W. Tuchman
"Uncommon valor was a common virtue." --Admiral Chester Nimitz
Jonathan Netanyahu
Military readings may seem unusual for me, but I have long been moved by the honor, courage, and commitment of those who sacrifice their all for others and their country. Perhaps one book that has had a profound impact on me over the years Jonathan Netanyahu's letters to his family about his love for them and his country Israel. He has been my hero for over thirty years.

Ancient Battles
I am a late bloomer when it comes to the great classics. Only a few years ago I read The Iliad and was swept away by Hector's goodness and honor. Achilles, Agamemnon, Paris, Helen, and Odysseus came to life for me.

Contemporary Marines
While participating in the Marine Corps University Educators Workshop in 2011, Ssgt. Joshua Bell recommended some military books that have had an impact on me. For instance, Nathaniel C. Fick's One Bullet Away shares one individual's experience from graduating at Dartmouth in classics and then OCS training and The Basic School at Quantico before being the first platoon leader into Afghanistan after 9/11 and into Iraq. I also was moved by the heroic account of Cpl. Joshua Durnham throwing himself on a grenade to save other Marines in The Gift of Valor and Brad Kasal's leadership in My Heroes are My Men.
