Western Readings List
“The Western is a story in which we get to have our cake and eat it. Shane does the killing, then rides into the mythical Tetons, carrying all our guilt away with him. Our problems have been solved quickly, and we are off the hook, guilt free, ready to go on, no blood on our hands." --William Kitteredge
Fiction of the American West
In 2010, I developed and taught a Fiction of the American West course. This class introduced students to literature genres and authors who wrote and contributed to our literary tradition. These readings are a part of our American West heritage. Students had the following reading choices.

Louis L'Amour
I grew up with Dad reading Louis L'Amour; in fact, he had every Louis L'amour book both in paper and hard copy which he dated each time he finished reading the book. It wasn't until much later in my life that I discovered the pleasure of reading L'Amour, especially the Sacketts sagas. Here are the Sacketts.
Terry C. Johnston
Johnston's Plainsmen Series introduces readers to fictional Seamus Donegan who is a soldier, guide, fighter, and explorer recounting significant battles of the American plains.
